Why is the far side of the Moon not the dark side?

The far side of the Moon isn't always dark; it gets just as much sunlight as the near side, just on a different schedule.

Calling the Moon's far side the "dark side" is a classic mix-up. Both sides of the Moon get hit by sunlight about equally during its 29.5-day orbit around Earth. The far side faces away from Earth but shines in sunlight just as much, just when the near side isn’t. So no, the far side isn't mooning in eternal darkness—it's just shy about facing us.
